Sometimes at work...
I try to come up with different outfits for difficult to match items. You know, just in case a customer will ask…what would you wear with this? Here are a few of my favorites: Cashmere cardigan in “Bright Dahlia”, Crewneck tee in “Monterey Pine”, Wool capri pants in “Bright Dahlia” Honeycomb Cable Sweater in “Light Citron”, Waffle...

Packaging
How cute and colorful is this box!? Ok, I realize that I’m a little too enthusiastic about a crumbly old box. But I buy a lot of vintage stuff on eBay and Etsy and most of the time the stuff arrives in questionable packaging…an old mac and cheese box, a box for bullets, a tampax box and my recent favorite, an envelope stuffed with newsprint paper (and yes, the item was damaged in the...

Random Conversations no: 1131 "Sex Ed"
Me: When I was in high school, we had to watch a slideshow with pictures of various body parts covered in STDs
Bret: Well when I was 13 my dad showed me a book with all sorts of disgusting STD photos.
Me: That's awkward
Bret: And then he told me, "That's what happens when you pick your nose and then masturbate. So don't pick your nose and masturbate."

Random Conversations at Work: no. 55
Me: Is there anything wrong with the shirt you're returning?
Customer: I bought it to wear to a wedding, but I've decided it's not appropriate.
Me: (looks at the large keyhole cutout in the front of the stretchy blouse and nods) Yeah, I guess I can see what you mean.
Customer: It's just so Asian. That's just tacky for a wedding.

Best Thing I Saw Today: An Abrupt End: Explosive High-Speed Photos by James Huse …these magnificent captures by designer James Huse are something wholly different. The surface of these inverted balloon photos flare and whorl like solar flares on the Sun, and yet simultaneously appear cold and frozen, perhaps the result of Huse’s decision to use milk-filled balloons. The project,...

Best Thing I Saw Today: Silver Tears Campers The teardrop camper. An instant classic when it first hit the American highway in the 40s. Often handbuilt in neighborhood garages from surplus war materials, the teardrop was a personal statement.

This Week I Made: Cheesecake! Blueberry White Chocolate Cheesecake! So the one of the reasons I’ve been baking a lot lately, is that I’ve been having Bobby Flay style throwdowns with my sister. This week we were competing over who would have the best cheesecake.  It’s still undecided who the winner was, but I’m proud to say that despite severely botching up this recipe...

Best Thing I Saw Today: A polargraph is what I decided to call this drawing machine that I made, but it also describes the output. The machine is a simple device, that draws picture using a normal pen, some motors and some string. It is only just good enough to get the job done, and in keeping with this technical brevity, I’m going to spare you more explanations about how it works:...

A Little Bit of Gardening
This week I got started on a project I’ve been putting off for a long time. (I think the “before” pictures will explain why.) We ripped out all the old plants, save for the roses, the bougainvillaea and one spikey odd tree/bush thing.  Then replaced it with fakahatchee grass and dwarf crown of thorns plants. Both of them are perennials that require full sunlight and minimal water...

Indoor Desert
Best Thing I Saw Today: In 1908, the town of Kolmanskop in southern Namibia  had become a profitable gold mine. Once the resources were exhausted, it was abandoned in 1954 and homes, hospitals, theaters, and factory buildings were left at the mercy of the Namib desert. Since then, the winds have filled the rooms of these deserted buildings with sand. See more from this series and more...

Today's lunar eclipse not visible from Florida
Floridians won’t get a chance to see the total eclipse of the moon that will be visible to much of the world today. In fact, the lunar eclipse, which will start about 1:24 p.m. and end about 7 p.m., making it one of the longest eclipses in recent years, won’t be visible in North America at all, according to NASA. It will be visible from eastern Africa, the Middle East, parts of Asia,...
